Practice
In order for the group to improve, it is the responsibility of each band member to practice at home multiple times per week.
Practice should be three things:
Consistent- Students should practice at home at least 3 times a week.
Intensely Focused- Minimize distractions by turning off the computer, tv or other electronic devices.
Target weakness at the edge of current ability- Practice something you cant quite perform correctly.

Practice Tools:
Aside from an instrument and music, students should also practice with two tools commonly used by musicians of all abilities.
Tuner: A Tuner helps students determine whether or not they are playing in tune. The easiest way for every student to have a tuner at home is by using an app on a smart device. If you do not have regular access to a smartphone or tablet, you can use a stand-alone tuner.
Metronome: A Metronome helps musicians keep a consistent tempo while practicing. Much like the tuner, you can find an app or purchase a stand alone metronome.
Combination Tuner/Metronome: To me, the Tonal Energy App is the best option. The app has a tuner, metronome and at around $4.00, is a steal. While using the tuner function, it gives students a % score of accuracy. Students can keep track of their tuning score each time they play!
Practice With Drums
For a fun variation on playing with a metronome, Click on one of the links below for a YouTube video of a steady drum beat to practice along with! Remember, Practice at a slower tempo and work your way up. If something is too fast, go to a slower track until you are able to play it at the faster tempo.
